About Karla Chambers — "The Clay Weaver"
Karla Chambers graduated with a BFA from Mount Mary College in Milwaukee, WI and is known as "The Clay Weaver" — a pun on her middle name and a nod to her truly distinctive pottery style. Her pieces resemble woven textiles and invite observers into a tactile exploration of clay as fabric.
Karla's love of fiber, fabric, and textile design began in college, but clay was always her first love. One day, she asked herself: "There's gotta be a way you can weave with clay." What followed was a series of experiments, failures, and discoveries that led to the signature style she teaches today.
"I honestly feel like clay is a living material, an element you really have to have a relationship with and know what it can do and what it can't do," she says. "But don't be too intimidated to try — clay is a friend to all. You don't have to have any experience to come in and start from the ground level and create something you can enjoy. It's a stress reliever, a chance to express yourself, because there's no perfect way to create anything out of clay."
